Professional stair installation tips

Are you thinking about installing carpet on your stairs without having to hire a professional carpet installer? Within this quick article I am going to detail several different techniques that my flooring company uses to install carpet on stairs.

The first part of stair carpet installation is to remove the old carpet, the padding and tack strip. I never advise using the old tack strip that is installed on the stairs, but if it is in decent condition it is possible to reuse it in place. Be sure to completely remove anything from the stairs and thoroughly sweep each step before installing the carpet.

Now that the stairs are prepared and cleaned it’s time to take some measurements to determine how much carpet that it is going to take to complete the job. Measuring the stairs is very easy, simply measure the width of one of the steps and risers. Additionally, measure the length of one of the stairs. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional three inches per stair to insure that there is enough carpet to cover all of the stairs.

Now, you are almost ready, but wait! Do you have all of the necessary tools to professionally install the carpeting on the stairs? Several different specialty carpet tools are needed to install the carpet correctly. Many of the following tools can be rented from a contractor rental store.

Carpet kicker
Stair tool
Hammer
Safety glasses (Not to look cool)
Measuring tape
Carpet staples
Upholstery nails
Knee pads
Razor knife

Okay, so first things first, now that you have all the necessary tools you can begin installing the tack strip to the crotch. With your hammer begin pounding in the nails to hold down the tack strip, a nail every six inches or so works fine to hold the tack strip down. Once all of the pieces of tack strip are measured, cut and nailed down to each of the stairs you can begin measuring, cutting and kicking in the new carpet with your carpet kicker.

There are two difference distinct methods for installing carpet on stairs, the first technique that I am going to talk about is called “cap and band technique”. The “Cap” defines the piece of carpet that is installed on top of the treads of the stairs, while the “Band” is the piece of carpet that is laid over the risers. The cap and band technique uses two piece of carpet to complete the carpet installation on the stairs.

To begin the cap and band technique first cut a piece of carpet out to the approximate size of the stair that you would like to install the carpet on. Next, kick the carpet into place with your knee kicker, then remove any remnants of carpet once the carpet is fully stretched into place with your razor knife. The same concept applies to installing the carpet onto the band of the stair, although you may not be able to kick the carpet in. In this case simply apply pressure to the knee kicker with your hands to stretch the carpet onto the band of the stair. Pretty simple!

The next stair installation technique that I am going to talk about today uses one complete piece of carpet for each cap and band (stair). This technique is  called the waterfall technique. Much of the same techniques that were used to install carpet using the cap and band technique apply to installing carpet using the waterfall technique. Additionally, both techniques require that the lip of the carpet is stapled once the carpet is attached to the tack strip and kicked in. Don’t forget to staple the lip!

Tip: Whatever technique that you decide to use always be sure to step back and look to see how well each step installed. Fixing any imperfections along the way will make the end result of the overall stair carpet installation job turn out a lot better.

With a whole lot of hard work, patience and physical endurance you too can become an expert stair carpet installer! Just be sure to do your home work, make your measurements and use the right tools!

Flooring Tutorials - Quick Guide To Flooring

Have you ever envisioned what your home would look like with new flooring? New floors can make your home feel fresh and new again. But where do you begin? How much do new floors cost? What’s the difference between all of the different kinds of flooring available? I have written up this flooring tutorial as a quick guide to flooring to help refresh your memory of some of the basics. So, lets begin.

It’s Spring time here in Clearwater, Florida and Pinellas Floor Covering is as busy as ever installing flooring around the local area. From solid hardwood flooring, laminate flooring, to engineered wood flooring, we are busier than ever!

For most people deciding on the kind of flooring that they want to install in their home can seem like a daunting task at first. It’s NOT, it’s actually really simple once you begin to learn some of the basics.
Before you begin the selection process you need to first familiarize yourself with the main types of flooring widely available on the market, then you can begin narrowing down the specific designs, colors, and grain patterns that suit your homes specific design style.

3 Main Types of Wood Flooring:
1) Solid wood flooring
2) Engineered wood flooring
3) Laminate flooring

Here in Florida, since the humidity is so high, it is not recommended to install solid hardwood flooring. While the installation of this type of flooring is possible, it is not suggested because of solid hardwood’s tendency to expand and contract under high humid environments.

To get around the high humidity problem and to still be able to use the natural essences of wood for a flooring material, the installation of engineered wood flooring is very typical for the area. Engineered wood flooring has many advantages over solid wood flooring. Engineered wood flooring is constructed with plies of lower grade wood and uses a premium wood veneer as an outer/top layer. This type of flooring material can cost as much as half as much as solid wood flooring and in the long run has a lifespan equal to, if not longer than the installation of solid hardwood flooring.

Another even more cost effective flooring option is to install laminate flooring. Laminate flooring is very similar to engineered wood flooring in the way that it uses laminated plies of wood pressed together during the manufacturing process. The main difference between laminate and engineered wood flooring is that laminate flooring does not use real wood for the top/outer layer. Instead laminate flooring uses a simulated wood grain for the top/out layer that is made from highly durable synthetic materials. Laminate flooring is a very cost effective, durable alternative to solid wood flooring or engineered wood flooring. A popular choice amongst price conscious consumers!

Now that you understand some of the basics you can begin narrowing down the type of wood, color and grain patterns that you like. Every flooring manufacturer offers access to their products online. A good place to start is to go through the top 10 laminate flooring manufacturers websites and locate several different types of flooring options that you like.

Top 10 Laminate Flooring Manufacturers

Once you have selected several different styles of flooring that you like you can then begin the process of locating a flooring contractor and flooring store. There are always qualified flooring contractors and flooring stores within every local community. I always suggest looking for one that has many years of experience and service to their local community. Medium sized “Mom and Pop” businesses can typically offer better prices and attention to detail since the owner of the business generally works directly within the business.

For these reasons of flooring company has grown into one of the largest and most reputable flooring stores and flooring contractors within the Tampa Bay and Clearwater area’s. We are not too big to lose our businesses focus, helping people, but we are big enough to offer one of the widest selection of wood flooring samples and the necessary skills and tools to get the job done right the first time!
